This Module is designed to lay a comprehensive English language foundation needed for university studies. It focuses on enhancing students’ competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking; as well as sharpening students’ skills at overall thought and expression. Students will be provided with ample opportunities to apply the language skills by getting engaged in integrated and communicative tasks and group learning activities. Coursework includes critical reading, essay writing and group presentation.
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
a. apply reading skills in academic and non-academic purposes;
b. write well-structured texts for specific purposes;
c. present and interact in different situations with confidence;
d. listen critically for information and intention; and
e. use multi-media technology to enhance self-directed learning.
1. Sharpening students’ reading skills and further application of them
1.1 Comprehending academic and non-academic texts at an advanced level
1.2 Adopting various reading strategies (skimming, scanning, identifying gist and differentiating details, referencing, guessing from vocabulary, comprehending writer’s attitude, understanding implications)
1.3 Selecting, evaluating, summarizing information from various types of reading passages when planning to write their original texts
2. Developing students’ writing skills
2.1 Awareness of accuracy and appropriacy with proper genres
2.2. Essential steps and strategies and components in the production of well-formed texts for specific purposes (brainstorming, planning, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading and benefitting from the feedback from tutors)
2.3. Crucial components in the production of written texts for specific purposes (thesis statements, introduction, topic sentences, supporting details, conclusion, paragraph and sentence transitions, use of examples, quotations, citations, and no plagiarism)
3. Consolidating students’ listening ability
3.1 Comprehending the intended message through application of different listening strategies (differentiating between gist and details, understanding speakers’ intention and attitudes)
4. Enhancing students’ speaking skills
4.1 Raising awareness of interpersonal communication strategies to achieve effective interaction (discussing, clarifying, persuading)
4.2 Conducting group discussions with audience awareness, proper organization, tone of language, interaction and non-verbal communication in various contexts
5. Polishing students’ acquired language learning skills
5.1 Revision, consolidation and clarification of selected items of grammar and sentence structures
5.2. Self-directed learning and practice through the use of on-line language learning resources
6. Fostering students’ ability to apply appropriate language skills mastered in an integrated manner in personal, academic and social contexts
