Module Description

This module aims to develop students’ English communicative skills in various professional contexts through a variety of real-life tasks and activities. Students will analyse the language, structures, and genres related to professional correspondence and formulate linguistic and communication strategies appropriate for their further studies or future careers. The interactive setting will allow students ample opportunities to express their ideas, discuss critically, and work collaboratively and professionally as a team in the corporate context.

Module Intended Learning Outcomes (MILO)

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
a. understand the importance of audience and purpose and select appropriate language functions
b. analyse the linguistic devices and discourse of professional English communication
c. plan and compose effective messages and texts for professional purposes;
d. give effective oral presentations appropriate to academic contexts; and
e. evaluate and reflect on communication and interpersonal skills for different professional contexts

 

Module Content

1.  Introduction to Business Communication

1.1 Construe the importance and essence of business communicative skills
1.2. Identify differences among general English, academic English and business English
1.3. Produce and apply a variety of business correspondences in relation to contexts and circumstances

2. Sales Brochures, Promotional Letters and Sales Pitches

2.1 Devise means and strategies to promote products or services relating to the target organisations
2.2. Plan and construct a sales pitch specific for the target products or services

3.  Letters of Complaint and Adjustment

3.1 Use appropriate language, style and tone to make a claim in the business contexts
3.2. Respond to the claims, either justified or unjustified, diplomatically

4. Proposals and Reports for Small-scale Business Research

4.1 Organise information and present ideas in written proposals
4.2. Interpret, report and analyse data in a variety of graphics, tables and texts

5. Meetings

5.1 Prepare an agenda prior to meetings
5.2. Employ the required language skills to communicate effectively in a simulated meeting
5.3. Write minutes of meeting using appropriate language, grammar and genre

6. Oral Presentation of Small-scale Business Research

6.1 Collect authentic first-hand information through interacting with business personnel
6.2. Synthesise and analyse collected information
6.3. Present the findings in front of audience

7.3. Write an impressive resume
