This module introduces the underlying factors and processes of urban development and evolution in Hong Kong. The module focuses on city development and the associated social, cultural, and political issues in Hong Kong.
Major topics include: theories and principles of urban development, rules and regulations, land use and supply, density and patterns of development, transportation and infrastructure, housing, commercial and mixed-use development, urban renewal and regeneration, culture and conservation, parks and open spaces, ecology and sustainability, smart city and technology, ethical city etc.
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
a. analyse the development and evolution of urban Hong Kong;
b. develop profile studies on selected districts and identify the needs of the city;
c. formulate arguments for the issue of urban development;
d. apply research materials and on-site surveys.
