BA-ENG , ENG1010 English for Effective Communication
This Module is designed to strengthen students’ English language literacy skills, equipping them with effective reading and writing skills necessary for university studies. In the area of reading, the focus will be on developing effective reading strategies and synthesizing information by paraphrasing and summarizing. In the area of writing, the focus will be on the construction of coherent and grammatically correct essays and the development of a well-structured thesis with evidence. Students will be provided with opportunities to apply the language skills by getting engaged in reading and writing activities, communicative tasks, and group learning activities.
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
a. comprehend, identify, and synthesize main ideas of written texts on both concrete and abstract topics from a variety of sources;
b. plan and write well-structured and coherent essays with reference to a range of sources, establish their stance through well-developed thesis statements, and demonstrate control of language accuracy in writing;
c. develop transferable skills that enable life-long learning in the areas of reading and writing.
1.Reading
1.1 Adopting various reading strategies (skimming, scanning, identifying gist and differentiating details, guessing meaning from context, comprehending writers’ attitudes)
1.2 Paraphrasing, summarizing, and synthesizing information from various types of reading passages
2. Writing
2.1 Taking steps and strategies in the production of well-formed essays (planning, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading)
2.2 Understanding crucial components of essay writing (thesis statements, introduction, topic sentences, supporting details, conclusion, paragraph and sentence transitions, use of examples)
2.3 Developing awareness of acknowledging sources of information
2.4 Identifying common errors in writing (Parallelism, run-ons and fragments)
3.Self-directed language learning
3.1 Cultivating an awareness of independent language learning
