Module Description

This module introduces students to major risks that may affect people, communities, and society, as well as ways to prepare, respond, and rebuild through scientific and engineering thinking.

Topics may include pandemics, natural disasters, infrastructure failures, nuclear accidents, asteroid impacts, and risks related to AI and technology. Using local, regional, and global examples, students explore basic human needs and develop practical and creative solutions through discussions, visual activities, maker sessions, hands on experience, and/or collaborative projects.

Students will be encouraged to apply imagination, experimentation, and interdisciplinary thinking to design, test, and improve innovative responses to real world risks and resilience challenges.

The module is designed for students from all academic backgrounds. No prior knowledge of science, engineering, coding, or technology is required.

Module Intended Learning Outcomes (MILO)

Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:

  1. Understand and explain major risks to people and communities, including but not limited to pandemics, nuclear accidents, extreme weather, infrastructure failure, and technology risks, using basic scientific evidence.
  2. Understand and explain how people, communities, technology, and the environment depend on one another, and identify weaknesses and practical ways to improve resilience.
  3. Use scientific and engineering methods to design, build, test, and improve practical solutions to resilience problems.
  4. Discuss the ethical and social effects of resilience strategies and new technologies in addressing major risks, including but not limited to responsible AI, fairness, safety, and community needs.
