ENG1030 English for Academic Purposes
This module is designed to build on students’ academic English language skills by engaging them in listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities that are relevant to real-world encounters in university and professional environments. Module topics will involve: how to read actively and purposefully; how to extract and analyse information from various types of sources to produce research/literature-supported academic writing; how to incorporate one’s own ideas into research/literature-supported work; how to develop well-reasoned arguments; identifying appropriate formats and styles for academic writing; and using academic referencing conventions citing sources in a bibliography.
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
a. demonstrate the ability to comprehend, analyse, synthesise and evaluate texts used in academic settings;
b. select and integrate relevant information from a variety of sources into scholarly tasks, and use references with proper citation conventions;
c. demonstrate the written communicative skills and critical thinking skills necessary for a range of academic tasks;
d. give effective oral presentations appropriate to academic contexts; and
e. select and appropriately exploit resources for self-directed language learning.
1. Apply critical reading and thinking strategies, and develop research skills to locate and differentiate academic supports
2. Work through a process of topic-searching, outlining, drafting, revising, proofreading, and editing to produce accurate, cohesive academic texts
3. Practise summarising, paraphrasing, direct-quoting skills, and apply referencing conventions in an academic context
4. Practise reading and writing as part of a research project
5. Practise giving oral presentations, provide peer feedback and taken on peer and teacher feedback
6. Acquire, practise and broaden academic vocabulary
7. Monitor and evaluate own language performance to develop an awareness of language needs
8. Do focused activities to heighten awareness and understanding of lexico-grammatical accuracy
