This refresher course aims to provide additional English language support to Year 2 and Year 3 Senior Year Entrants for their study in HSUHK. This course comprises an online self-study component focusing on accurate grammar usage and vocabulary expansion; and a face-to-face component on enhancing students’ language skills for their academic study. This course also aims to develop students’ language abilities in fulfilling the requirement of language competency of HSUHK.
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to:
a. develop the ability to produce a wide variety of accurate English syntactic patterns for both writing and speaking,
b. expand the productive lexis in relevant topic areas,
c. employ suitable language strategies to facilitate their academic study,
d. recognise the common errors made and provide an opportunity to address these errors.

2.2 Read to Write: Understand the structure of good writing
3. Effective Academic Writing Skills
3.1 Structure of essay writing (Introduction and thesis statements; topic sentences and supporting details and relevant examples; conclusion)
3.2 Correctness of effective writing: Identifying common errors in writing
4. Effective Listening Strategies
4.1 Developing strategies for interpreting academic texts
4.2 Listening in a timed context
5. Effective Speaking Strategies
5.1 Developing skills for presenting comments on the correctness of a text and participating in group discussions
